Naseeruddin Shah was born in the Uttar Pradesh town of Barabanki on July 20, 1949. He was one of his parents’ three sons. His father was Aley Mohammed Shah, and his mother was Farrukh Sultan. Naseeruddin Shah received the most of his education in Nainital and eventually graduated from Aligarh Muslim University, where he fell in love with theater.

Following his graduation from the Arts stream, Shah decided to pursue a diploma in acting from the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi, despite opposition from his family members. Soon after finishing his diploma programme, Shah relocated to Mumbai, where he began his career in low-budget plays.

Introduction

When Shah was a 20-year-old graduate student at Aligarh Muslim University in 1969, he met Parveen Murad (Naseeruddin Shah First Wife), a 34-year-old medical intern who was also a student at the same university. Parveen, also known as Manara Sikri, was Surekha Sikri‘s sister.

Background

Shah’s confidante and friend Parveen, whose sister was already a successful actress, was a firm supporter of his career choice. However, Parveen was a divorcee with children from a previous marriage who lived in Iran with her family. Because of these considerations, his family was strongly opposed to him marrying her.

On Parveen’s side, the 14-year age gap was cited as a major point of contention, with Parveen’s family claiming Shah might change his mind in time. But Shah was adamant, having developed a strong crush on her. Naseeruddin Shah married Parveen in a traditional nikah ceremony in 1969, after she graduated, against the wishes of his family. In response, Shah promised the bride’s family hefty alimony in the event of a divorce.

On August 20, 1970, the couple had their first and only child together, a daughter named Heeba. 

Career

Shah is alleged to have severed all contact with Parveen, who was a practicing doctor at the time and lived in Mumbai with her young daughter. Parveen was extremely disturbed when her husband abandoned her and her newborn within a year of their marriage, and she left India with Heeba to settle in London, where she continued to practice medicine.

The couple had divorced but not separated. Because Shah was unable to provide the large sum of money all at once, it took him 12 years to accumulate the funds for Parveen’s alimony and secure a divorce. Pa.rveen remarried in Iran and died in 1990, a decade later

Ratna Pathak

Shah couldn’t take his gaze away from her, and after the formal introductions, Shah learned that she would be appearing in Satyadev’s play. Ratna Pathak was the daughter of legendary stage actress Dina Pathak and the younger sister of Shahid Kapur’s stepmother, Supriya Pathak. Ratna was just starting out in her career, following in the footsteps of her mother and elder sister. Shah was drawn to her since she was an actress like him. The fact that she was nine years his junior didn’t stop him from expressing his feelings for her.

By the mid-1970s, the couple had a solid relationship, and because they couldn’t marry until Shah’s impending divorce, the couple had a live-in relationship in an era when it was common knowledge in Bollywood, but still somewhat frowned upon.
