Swaroop Sampat was born in Pune, India. Her father is an engineer by profession, and her mother was a homemaker. She showed an aptitude for the performing arts from a young age and started taking Bharatanatyam dance lessons at seven. At school, she was active in sports as well as academics.
Swaroop graduated with honors from Fergusson College in Pune and then went to London to pursue her Masters in Drama from the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA). During this time, she also attended various director’s workshops conducted by the Rudolf Steiner School of Dramatic Arts at Oxford University which eventually inspired her to be part of Indian Cinema.
Upon returning to India, Swaroop worked with some of the most respected directors including Shyam Benegal who cast her in popular television series such as ‘The Great Maratha‘ and ‘Surabhi‘. She was also seen playing lead roles opposite actors like Amitabh Bachchan (‘Anand’) Anupam Kher (‘Arun’) Vinod Khanna (‘Parinda’), Sanjeev Kumar (‘Thodisi Bewafaii’) Rajesh Khanna (‘Woh Saat Din’). Her breakout role came when she starred alongside Ajay Devgan in director Rajiv Rai’s blockbuster hit ‘Tridev’.
Swaroop has also ventured into theatre where she acted and directed plays like ‘Razia Sultan’ and ‘A Tribute To Tagore’ starring herself along with noted actors Ila Arun and Bhavana Banerjee respectively. Despite being offered a part in another popular television serial, Swaroop rejected the offer and decided to go ahead with Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi because she found the script very touching and relatable to common people, showcasing their everyday lives and struggles with simplicity.
